♬Liner Notes♬: What a great new week of sounds! We've got some of my favorite bands like Low and Yo La Tengo, newcomers like Boy, Savages and Hunter Hunted plus sophomore efforts from Pétur Ben and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. We'll begin with Portland's own: Sallie Ford! Now let's sit back, put our headphones on Pump Up Tha Volume!
Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside
"Party Kids"
'Untamed Beast'
Partisan, 2013
Note: Sweet! We begin with one of Portland's up-and-coming bands that was named the 'Best New Band' by Willamette Week in 2010. Paste Magazine says "Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside have announced that their new album Untamed Beast will be released Feb. 19, 2013. The 11-track collection was recorded with Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Diamond Rugs) and Justin Collins at Portlandâs Jackpot! Studios... Untamed Beast is the third studio album from Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside."

Hunter Hunted
"Keep Together" single
self-released, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "LA duo Hunter Hunted rose from the embers of their previous incarnation as Lady Danville". Meanwhile, The Music Ninja blog says "Dan Chang and Michael Garner are back with another solid indie pop track, âKeep Togetherâ ... With Hunter Hunted, weâve already grown to expect a few things: an upbeat, dancy tempo, gorgeous vocal harmonies, and lyrics that urge you to sing along with them. Press play, and see how long you can go without smiling and dancing in your chair."

Savages
"Husbands"
'Husbands/Flying To Berlin' single
Pop Noire, 2012
Note: Pitchfork says that "Violence and domestication rub against each other on London four-piece Savages' debut single... though the pairing veers wildly from the obvious conclusion. In the chorus, French-born singer Jehnny Beth shrieks "husbands, husbands, husbands, husbands," over and over through shards of hysteria, orgasm and indignance, the lustful repetition of the spousal noun rendering it meaningless and empty as the soulless eyes next to which the song's narrator awakes one day."

Low
"Just Make It Stop"
'The Invisible Way'
Sub Pop, 2013
Note: Spin says "Low's tenth long-player is coming March 19 via Sub Pop, and knowing that Wilco main man Jeff Tweedy is producing The Invisible Way makes that news all the more exciting. Of course, "exciting" isn't a word oft bandied about when it comes to the Duluth, Minnesota trio â heartfelt, slow-burning, doleful, and stately would all be acceptable entries in a game of Apples to Apples, and it's Low's consistent ability to perfectly weave these very grown-up vibes into album after album of tensely beautiful songs that keeps their cultish base clamoring for more."

Caught A Ghost
"Sleeping At Night"
'Nightworks' EP
+1 Records, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "Caught A Ghost frontman Jesse Nolan is possessed by music of bygone eras. Their forthcoming EP Nightworks, due in February, straddles the sounds of soul and rock and... a little bit of dubstep." Meanwhile, Filter Magazone says "The playful intro is a clear tribute to oldschool Motown and Stax records, and quickly builds into a beat driven, soulful anthem with horns piping up on the chorus... Their debut EP "Nightworks" is due for release February 12 on +1 Records."

Caspian
"Hickory '54"
'Waking Season'
Triple Crown, 2012
Note: Caspian is an instrumental post-rock band from Beverly, Massachusetts and our song source KEXP says this song "is one of most emotionally charged tracks on Waking Season. Building from a simple stomp and clap at the beginning, the instrumental song explodes into a fury of guitar and drum beyond the reach of words."
(More Info)
Yo La Tengo
"I'll Be Around"
'Fade'
Matador, 2013
Note: The Los Angeles Times says that "On the 13th Yo La Tengo album, the couple works through complicated emotions with as much elegance and grace as ever. A gentle record featuring strings, humming keyboards, the gorgeous roaming bass lines of longtime member James McNew and the occasional muted brass section, "Fade" is classic Yo La Tengo: honest, unpretentious and, above all, catchy." We listened to it all the way through the other night and my only complaint is that Georgia didn't sing lead vocals until track seven!

Unknown Mortal Orchestra
"So Good At Being In Trouble"
'II'
Jagjaguwar, 2013
Note: The Pretty Much Amazing blog says that "With UMOâs more developed sound, it seems like thereâs still a lot of exploration on II. Thereâs wondering and noodling around with complex melodies and a lot less of the quick-hit catchy riffs that radiated from their older songs. A welcomed change, UMOâs new approach showcases intricate guitar work that sings on its own." The New Zealand band's new record will be out February 5th.

Pétur Ben
"Cold War Baby"
'Gods Lonely Man'
Gogoyoko, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says "âCold War Babyâ comes from Pétur Benâs long-awaited, self-released second album. Though itâs been six years in the making, Godâs Lonely Man is undoubtedly worth the wait and despite its late 2012 release, has been claimed by many as one of the best albums of the year."
(More Info)
Bleeding Rainbow
"Waking Dream"
'Yeah Right'
Kanine, 2013
Note: Stereogum says "Philly garage vets Bleeding Rainbow â formerly Reading Rainbow â have a new album out in January, a release from which weâve already heard âPink Ruffâ and âDrift Away.â Now theyâve just released another, a loud-quiet-loud jam called âWaking Dream.â"
(More Info)
The Lions
"Pieces of A Man"
'This Generation'
Stones Throw, 2013
Note: Song source KCRW says "The Lions were weaned on classic Jamaican records. Now signed to one of LAâs best labels, Stones Throw Records, and with a slew of talented musicians behind the project, they aimed to create the kind of dusty sounding recordings they themselves love on their new album, This Generation." Meanwhile, Potholes In My Blog says "The Lions are made of of members of the Ska band Hepcat, as well as Malik Moore and Black Shakespeare. The last of which is a cousin of Robbie Shakespeare of Sly & Robbie. In other words, these guys are talented, and have no trouble bringing new life to such a vintage sound. âThis Generationâ is packed with social commentary and joyful vibes."
(More Info)
Thomas Kivi and The Immigrants
"Cops and Crims"
'Thomas Kivi and The Immigrants' EP
self-released, 2013
Note: Their Electronic Press Kit (or EPK if you're nasty) says that "Thomas Kivi is a Wisconsin-raised songwriter whose poignant lyrics and simple melodies have given a traditional tinge to the Twin Cities indie-music scene since his arrival in 2008. With a âhuckleberry voice that leans more toward John Denver than Conor Oberstââa voice that MPR's 89.3 The Current calls âhonest and unassumingââKivi has been compared to old poetic troubadours like Bob Dylan and Townes van Zandt as well as Midwestern indie-contemporaries Jeff Tweedy and Justin Vernon."

Boy
"This Is The Beginning"
'Mutual Friends'
Groenland, 2011
Note: The 'I Nearly Died Of Boredom' blog asks "feeling numb? need some inspiration? well here's the invigorating & gorgeously lilting, plinky-plucky, rousing new single This Is The Beginning from Hamburg/Zürich-based folk-pop duo Boy {Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass} off their delightful debut album "Mutual Friends" (2011)."
(More Info)
The Hoot Hoots
"Go For A Walk"
'Feel The Cosmos' EP
self-released, 2012
Note: And finally, song source KEXP says "The Hoot Hoots have been rising on the Seattle scene since late 2008. Since 2010, theyâve been dropping records like mad and keeping all keen enough to listen quite busy with their ever-expanding catalogue. For the most part, they play insanely upbeat power pop and sing about robots and dinosaurs."
